Study links proning to nerve damage
A study of 83 COVID-19 patients who were proned while placed on a ventilator found 12 developed peripheral nerve injury involving one or more major joints. The injuries were severe and included loss of hand function, frozen shoulder and foot dragging. Although proning is a life-saving intervention, the research raises questions about whether the way patients are proned can be improved in some cases to avoid nerve injury. (HealthDay article, 9/4/20)
