CNOs can make business case for well-being initiatives

Leaders who prioritize nurse well-being can improve their organization’s retention and overall earnings, says AONL member Diane Sieg, RN, creator of the Well-Being Coaching Initiative. Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health used a Well-Being Coaching Initiative pilot program to reduce nurse turnover by 30%, saving $3 million in one year. Sieg says nurses who prioritize their well-being can give more to patients, their careers and their profession. Hospitals can gauge nurse well-being by using standard validated assessments to measure burnout, engagement, stress and self-compassion before, during and after implementing initiatives. Sieg recommends CNOs practice compassion for themselves and find ways to re-energize. She also urges nurse leaders to continue well-being initiatives. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/24/28)
