Essay calls for antiracist nursing practice
The authors of “I can’t breathe”: A Call for Antiracist Nursing Practice wrote the killing of George Floyd by a police officer during the COVID-19 pandemic “brought the effects of structural racism on Black Americans into focus. Black Americans are dying from Coronavirus disease 2019 at a higher rate, and are also more likely to be the victims of police killings.” The authors argued nurses are uniquely positioned to combat racism in American health care systems and communities. They issued a call to action intended to highlight the antiracist practices nurses can adopt in response. Recommended actions included recognizing personal biases, taking new approaches to research and using antiracist pedagogy. (Nursing Outlook article, 8/15/20)
