Crisis Strategies Help Hospitals Cope With Patient Surge
As health systems and hospitals prepare to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, five strategies can help leaders prepare for the surge in patients, according to a report from global accounting and consulting firm BDO. The report recommends establishing a crisis command center staffed with leaders in communications, finance, human resources and supply chain issues; transforming infrastructure by locating and converting unused space to accommodate increased patient volume; streamlining processes for managing inventory and coordinating with community partners who have the capacity to screen patients and manage post-acute care; addressing staffing issues by communicating clearly, providing support services and recruiting additional clinicians; and encouraging patients to use telehealth services. The report details each of these strategies. (HealthLeaders Media story, 4/7/20)
