Black nurses share perspectives on leadership program
To investigate the effectiveness for African American nurses of a leadership development collaboration between an urban baccalaureate nursing program and a large health care system, the authors of a qualitative analysis conducted in-depth interviews with 19 program participants. Writing in the July/August issue of Journal of Nursing Administration (JONA), the authors asserted the program was effective in enculturating African American nurses into the practice environment and eventual leadership roles. “The better we understand these experiences and equip [African American] nurses with the tools needed for success, the greater their influence will be on ensuring every patient receives exemplary care and our health care institutions are better positioned to care for the diverse populations we serve,” the authors concluded.
