Trauma-informed workplaces help nurses heal
To help nurses heal from the stress and trauma of caring for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, nurse leaders and their employers need to inform themselves about trauma and how they can create a culture that cultivates resilience. Creating a trauma-informed environment begins by asking the right questions and listening, Purdue University School of Nursing’s Karen J. Foli, PhD, RN, told HealthLeaders Media in a recent interview. She outlined a framework for treating trauma and said unless hospitals and health systems address the problem, nurses will flee the profession. According to a recent McKinsey survey, 22% of nurses are considering leaving direct patient care. (HealthLeaders Media article, 10/18/21)
