CMS launches hospital-at-home program to increase capacity
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched its Acute Hospital Care at Home program in November to increase the capacity of the health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the program, which expands on the temporary Hospitals Without Walls program CMS announced in March, hospitals can transfer patients from emergency departments or inpatient wards to hospital-level care at home and continue to receive Medicare hospital payments. The program is designed for people with acute asthma, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other acute conditions that can be treated safely at home.
