CMS data show ‘drastic decline’ in child preventive services
Rates of vaccination and use of primary and preventive services among the almost 40 million children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) declined steeply during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data released last week by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Between March and May, there were 22% fewer beneficiaries aged 0-2 who received vaccinations; 44% fewer children were screened as part of efforts to encourage early detection of autism and developmental delays; and 69% fewer children received dental services. The agency expressed concern about the potential long-term impact this care avoidance could have on the children’s health. (CMS news release, 9/23/20)
