Workforce, Workplace Issues Challenge CNOs in 2020
Making sure the nursing workforce feels safe, engaged and valued should be a top priority for chief nursing officers (CNOs) in 2020. That’s the view of AONL member Shela Kaneshiro, MBA, RN, vice president, patient care services and CNO at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif. In an interview with HealthLeaders Media, Kaneshiro discussed ways she and her staff had countered workplace stress by developing a confidential peer support program, along with responses to workplace violence and the anticipated retirements of older nurses. “Even though we may have this mass exodus of our boomers,” she said. “We have a good couple of generations in the workforce that's available to take on these new challenges.” (Health Leaders Media story, 1/10/20)
