Study: Nurses speak up when organizational trust is present
A work environment with organizational trust contributes to oncology nurses’ speaking up to prevent medical errors and improve patient care, according to a study. Published in the September 2023 issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration, the study surveyed 473 oncology nurses at two university hospitals in Turkey between January and September 2019. Nurses who trusted the organization, their colleagues and their manager had greater speak-up rates. More experienced nurses and those who worked less than 40 hours per week had higher levels of speak-up behavior. Nurses who were not rewarded for professional inventions, did not have flexible working conditions and felt their duties were invisible within the institution performed fewer speak-up behaviors.
