Nurses of color find more educational financial support
Efforts to provide educational financial support to nurses of color are gaining traction, according to DNPs of Color founder Danielle McCamey, DNP, RN. Many ethnic minority nursing associations offer educational financial support to students. Grants, scholarships or improved access to loans can offset the greater socioeconomic instability that nurses from underrepresented backgrounds often face. This assistance can result in more nurses from diverse backgrounds ascending to advanced nursing roles. Students of color often withdraw from nursing school programs without financial assistance because they have difficulty balancing the need to work full time while pursuing a degree to afford tuition and school expenses, said McCamey.
