Job-related stress reduces patient safety culture
Fatigue, workload, burnout and workplace violence contribute to job-related stress and cause a worse patient safety culture, according to a systematic review. The study, published in February 2023 in BMC Nursing, reviewed seven studies published between 2017 and 2021. The authors call for nurse managers and administrators to take actions to minimize job-related stress and improve their work environments to improve patient care. They recommend additional studies to develop interventions to reduce workplace stress and improve nurses’ safety. In addition, they believe nurse managers and educators should emphasize resilience and train nurses on how to work in trauma-informed care. (AHRQ Patient Safety Network study, 3/22/23)
