Beyers remembered as nurse leader in many settings
Former AONL Executive Director Marjorie Beyers, 85, passed away Jan. 13. Beyers was passionate about nursing and served in a number of leadership and education roles in her extensive career. In her five years with AONL ending in 2000, Beyers set the course as an advocate for the organization’s strategic initiatives, working closely with the board president to expand AONL’s influence. In addition to her role with AONL, she served as executive director of the National Commission on Nursing, executive director of the Evanston (Ill.) Hospital School of Nursing, vice president of nursing and allied health at Mercy Health Services, and a tenured professor at University of Texas at Austin. In retirement, she served as a consultant for nursing and health care systems and as the interim chancellor at St. John’s College in Springfield, Ill. She authored more than 10 books and numerous articles. Beyers was the recipient of many honors, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Indiana University School of Nursing, Bloomington, and the Distinguished Service Award from Mercy College in Detroit.
