AHA Releases 2023 Environmental Scan

The average RN vacancy rate in hospitals rose from 9.9% in 2021 to 17% in 2022, according to the American Hospital Association 2023 environmental scan. An AHA board task force on the workforce has identified strategies to address these challenges, including a strengthened culture of healing, creative staffing, care model redesign, technology integration, restructured educational models and pathways, and utilization of data and analytics. The scan provides an overview health system trends including those addressing workforce; health equity; behavioral health; affordability and access; rural health; consumerism; and social and demographic developments. By sharing data and trends with implications for the health care field for 2023 and beyond, leaders can use the scan to spark discussions with their board, staff and community stakeholders.
