Study sheds light on work satisfaction among nurse leaders

Much of the research related to nurses and burnout has focused on bedside caregivers, but nurse leaders also face challenges and work in environments that create conditions for professional burnout. This study combined 16 in-depth interviews with survey data from 672 nurse clinical managers, senior clinical managers and directors at 29 hospitals to better understand nurse-leader levels of burnout, secondary trauma and compassion satisfaction. The researchers found significant increases in overall satisfaction with each level of leadership but better satisfaction with work-life balance among clinical managers. The study was funded in part by an AONL small grants program. (JONA article, Sept. 2019)
