Dismissing patient, caregiver concerns tops patient safety threat list

Dismissing patient, family and caregiver concerns topped ECRI’s 2025 list of significant patient safety threats. The Plymouth Meeting, Pa.-based health care safety organization said limited time and resources could hinder clinicians from addressing their concerns and inadvertently lead to missed or delayed diagnoses. A HealthCentral survey found more than 94% of patients reported instances when physicians ignored or dismissed their symptoms. ECRI says solutions require a holistic approach incorporating leadership and governance, patient engagement, workforce wellness and training infrastructure to promote safety. ECRI will hold a webinar on March 18 at 1:00 p.m. ET to discuss the risks of clinicians dismissing concerns. Participants should register in advance. (ECRI article, 3/10/25)
