National Quality Forum, Humana release food-insecurity resource

The National Quality Forum (NQF) and Humana Inc. released a new food insecurity guide providing strategies to help health care organizations assist individuals in their communities who are experiencing negative health outcomes associated with inconsistent access to food. Food insecurity results from a multitude of causes including skipping meals, eating higher quantities of cheaper foods and rationing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. All of these practices can undermine health by contributing to chronic disease. The guide addresses issues such as routine screening, appropriate clinical actions and the need to measure rates of food insecurity. It offers strategies that can be tailored to an organization’s resources and needs. (NQF news release, 3/2/20)
