National Academy of Medicine Releases Future of Nursing Report
This week, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) released The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity. The report focuses on ways nurses can bridge the health and social needs of individuals, families and communities and better prepare nurses to respond to and withstand the strains of future public health emergencies. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) funded the report, which builds on NAM’s 2011 study on nursing. The American Hospital Association and AONL contributed to the report. Its recommendations range from strengthening nursing education to promoting diversity and equity to protecting nurses’ health and well-being. It also reiterates its recommendations from the first report for more nurses to earn PhDs, for all nurses to lead in developing policy, and for the removal of barriers that prevent nurses from practicing to the full extent of their education and training.
