HCA Healthcare purchases third college of nursing

This week, HCA Healthcare, based in Nashville, Tenn., announced its purchase of a majority stake in Galen College of Nursing. The college, which was established in 1989 to prepare nurses for the Humana hospital system during a nursing shortage, will allow HCA Healthcare to better serve the educational needs of the roughly 94,000 RNs employed at its 2,000 care sites. “Galen’s commitment to expand access to quality nursing education perfectly aligns with our focus on giving our nurses—at the bedside and in leadership—great programs and career advancement opportunities that will enable them to deliver better care,” said HCA Healthcare’s Chief Executive Officer Sam Hazen. Galen College delivers its programs on five campuses and online. The college’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Vogt said he expects the deal to “connect the latest in evidence-based practice to the delivery of nursing education on a significant scale.” (Business Wire news release, 1/7/20)
