RWJF lists lessons learned on developing nurse leaders, faculty
Continuing leadership development over one’s career, accelerating the nursing doctoral to faculty pipeline, intentional mentoring and building long-term supportive leadership communities are successful strategies to develop nurse leaders and faculty, say leaders who oversaw Robert Wood Johnson Foundation nursing leadership programs. RWJF employed the strategies in its Executive Nurse Fellows, New Jersey Nursing Initiative, Nurse Faculty Scholars and Future of Nursing Scholars programs. The authors note nursing leaders can develop similar programs by forming partnerships with federal agencies, philanthropic organizations and universities. Leadership development, mentoring and creating strong communities of support do not require extensive resources and could be implemented on a regional basis to be more cost-effective. To secure resources for dedicated research time and grant support, schools could collaborate with community and local family foundations. (Nursing Outlook article, 11/20/24)
