Nurses should practice through trauma-informed lens, article says

With roughly 70% of U.S. adults experiencing at least one trauma, nurses should learn and practice trauma-informed care, according to an American Association of Colleges of Nursing Diversity Digest article. Trauma-informed care considers how trauma affects the brain and body. Faculty need tools to identify and empower students affected by trauma. They also should teach students self-care practices to build their self awareness and capacity to connect with patients. Faculty and practice leaders should build an environment where patients and students feel safe. Practice leaders should use a trauma-informed care lens as part of the nursing assessment and develop collaborative relationships with behavioral health professionals to support patients.
