Novant Health uses mentoring to reduce turnover
Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center started an Emeritus Nursing Program in January 2022 to bring retired nurses back to the bedside to mentor inexperienced nurses and reduce turnover. The program at the Wilmington, N.C.-based hospital retains the expertise of long-term nurses, avoiding knowledge gaps that can occur when they retire and new nurses replace them. Emeritus nurses typically work four-hour shifts on their chosen workdays, with compensation based on their experience. They work as part of the care team, rather than as preceptors.
