Hospital designs pregnancy care for Hispanic families
An American Hospital Association podcast describes how Chester County Hospital in suburban Philadelphia cut postpartum complications by more than half by deploying bilingual volunteers to ask Hispanic patients how to improve care. AONL Nurse Manager Fellow alum Katie Costantini, MSN, RN, director of maternal child services, said the hospital found one week post-discharge, 38% of families could not recall any information about potential postpartum concerns. The hospital subsequently made its education materials available in Spanish and provided education to the entire family, since mothers said they were more likely to listen to their family than a health care provider. The hospital partnered with the county food bank to establish a pantry near the clinic, enabling patients to take groceries home after their prenatal appointments.
