Commentary: Nurses should be involved in AI policy
Nurses should be involved in developing and testing any artificial intelligence used in the nursing process, according to a commentary published in July in Nursing Inquiry. The use of sensors, wearables, camera devices and humanoid robots have blurred the boundaries between human- and nonhuman-driven nursing care, but AI’s impact on patient safety has not been fully assessed, the authors state. They argue nurses should be “empowered to verbalize their contribution to health care and how AI can be used to extend that contribution.” The authors emphasize AI, while aiding in decision-making and the completion of some tasks, does not eliminate the need for nurses’ critical judgment.
