CNOs can help to reduce repeat needlesticks
CNOs should educate other nursing and hospital leaders about technology alternatives enabling needleless blood draws, according to AONL member and CNO Anna Kiger, DNP, RN. The CNO at Sutter Health in Sacramento, Calif., says the device enables a small tube to enter the blood vessel through the IV, eliminating an additional needlestick during blood draws. The device can eliminate repeat needlesticks, as well as reduce the pain and anxiety patients experience when a nurse or phlebotomist draws blood. A recent study found 59% of patients needed multiple needlestick attempts for IV insertion and 71% for blood draws, contributing to a more negative hospital experience.
