Academic partnerships can improve clinician pipeline
To improve recruitment and retention, health systems are reestablishing the academic partnerships that collapsed during the pandemic, according to AONL member Maribeth McLaughlin, MPM, RN, vice president and CNE at UPMC Health System in Pittsburgh. UPMC created an academic affairs office to help students find placements, and a senior nurse leader serves as a point person for each of UPMC’s 140 partner schools. UPMC also restructured its onboarding program to better support new hires. They receive advice on proper sleeping and eating, wearing the right shoes and knowing how many shifts they should work. They also are taught how to deescalate situations, delegate, work in teams and process their emotions. (HealthLeaders Media article, 1/29/24)
