Future of Nursing meeting takes on paying for population health
The challenge of scaling up nursing interventions that improve the lives of vulnerable people dominated the third regional meeting hosted by the Committee on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030. Held at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia, the meeting highlighted evidence-based programs that rely on nurses to address the social as well as clinical needs of individuals at various stages in their lives. Three presentations described federal, state and institutional payment models driving preventive care for populations with complex health and social needs. The creative use of Medicaid dollars to foster employment, develop supportive housing and improve post-natal care emerged as one promising practice. Presenters called for electronic health records and quality measures to better capture nurses’ contributions to care and create a basis for evaluating novel payment strategies.
