C-Suite executives describe nurse empowerment in study
A May Journal of Nursing Administration study examining C-suite executives’ strategies to empower the nursing workforce rated certain methods as better than others. Authors AONE member Lindell M. Joseph, PhD, RN, clinical professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, Iowa City and Richard J. Bogue, associate clinical professor at the university, sought input from a health system’s 47 top executives. The authors found the best-rated strategies were giving teams public praise; modeling behaviors consistent with the hospital’s values and mission; being clear about organizational objectives, goals, mission and performance expectations; teaching managers how to coach and lead; and soliciting recommendations and solutions from unit-level nursing practice councils.
