Supportive leadership underpins millennial nurses' work satisfaction
Using data from the Professional Practice Work Environment Inventory survey, researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston assessed the relationship between demographic factors and work satisfaction in an effort to increase their understanding of millennial nurses. This group comprises 30% of the nursing workforce, and earlier research found millennials more likely than earlier generations to be dissatisfied with their work, leading to high turnover. The nurses in this study worked in a Magnet-designated academic medical center, and the majority of them were satisfied with their work. The researchers found supportive leadership accounted for nearly 63% of work satisfaction; demographics accounted for less than 3% of the variance in work satisfaction. (JONA article, Sept. 2019)
