Studies examine work environment relationship to nurse burnout
A new meta-analysis from the University of Pennsylvania’s Nursing Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research found significant associations between poor work environments and negative outcomes for both nurses and patients. Associations with nurse job dissatisfaction, burnout and plans to leave the workplace were especially pronounced. A separate study from Penn Nursing offers a solution: investing in improving nurses’ work environments. At hospitals where nurses reported improvements in patient safety and the quality of care, the researchers found a 12 percent decrease in burnout over a decade. (Campaign for Action story, 5/21/19)
