WellSpan Health CEO discusses nurse retention solutions
In an American Hospital Association podcast, WellSpan Health CEO Roxanna Gapstur, PhD, RN, credits virtual nursing with the system’s high nurse retention rate, as it enables nurses to spend more time with patients and decreases time spent on documentation. The York, Pa.-based system prioritizes well-being and uses tiered huddles, with leadership quickly addressing challenges. WellSpan participates in healthy county coalitions to help meet community health needs. WellSpan York Hospital has partnered on a program to pair “credible messengers” with victims and families who enter the hospital because of gun violence. These individuals address deeper causes of community gun violence. During the last three years, gunshot wounds fell 43% at York Hospital, while community homicides fell 71%. WellSpan received AHA’s 2024 Quest for Quality prize.
