2023 AONL Foundation Highlights
2023 was a fantastic year for the AONL Foundation. The following highlights showcase some of the work accomplished thanks to the AONL members and friends - donors, sponsors, volunteers, program participants, committee members, corporate council members and others. Thank you for help making the mission and vision happen.
Research
Supported new nursing leadership research with about $18,000 in grants, awards and contracts.
Hosted the Research Plenary session at the AONL Annual Conference featuring Drs. Dana Bjarnason, Deborah Eldredge, and Lourdes Moore.
Recognized Patricia Patrician, PhD, RN, FAAN as the 2023 AONL Foundation Researcher of the Year for her significant contribution to nursing and health systems research.
Dr. Lindsey Munn presented a breakout session on Understanding Chief Nursing Officer Turnover at the AONL Annual Conference.
The AONL Foundation – ALSN Research Council is becoming the Nursing Leadership and Systems Science Council (NLSSC), with a memorandum of understanding in process.
The NLSSC led the creation of a response to the CCNE Standards Committee regarding the Proposed CCNE Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs.
Continuing to support 5 studies, in various stages of completion:
• Understanding Chief Nursing Executive Turnover
• Perceived organizational effectiveness and moral wellness among nurse leaders during an emergency: A cross-sectional study
• Understanding the Current State of Nurse Leader’s Social Media Engagement: the #SoMenurseleaderssurvey
• Innovative Teaching and Learning: Key Metrics of an Undergraduate Nursing Academic and Clinical Learning Environment
• In collaboration with the AONL Workforce Task Force, the NLSSC is studying innovative care delivery models and their effectiveness and implementations.- Coordinated with AONL to field the 5th iteration of the AONL Foundation Longitudinal Nursing Leadership Insight Study, released in early January 2024
Financial Aid
Awarded one financial aid package for the 2024 AONL Nurse Manager Fellowship.
Leadership Think Tank Program
- Hosted 5 Think Tank Programs:
• August 3, 2023 – Technology to Support Nurse Leaders: Making the case for your organization to implement effective tools
• August 31, 2023 – Exploring Social Media through the Nurse Leader Lens
• September 20, 2023 – Retaining Today’s New-to-Practice Nurse
• November 1, 2023 – Exploring Data Usability in Health Care
• December 15, 2023 – Promoting Workplace Safety and Preventing Violence
- Executive summaries and next step documents are in process.
More than 70 nurse leaders participated in these programs, and six companies sponsored these programs.
Beyond Gratitude
Two articles from the Beyond Gratitude research published:
- “Creating an Organizational Culture and Climate of Meaningful Recognition for Nurse Managers” in JONA, July 2023.
- “The Role of the Wider Organization and Community in Meaningful Nurse Manager Recognition” in Nurse Leader, on demand September 2023, in print December 2023.

Additional Highlights
Recognized Sharon Canon, EdD, RN, ANEF as the AONL Foundation's 2023 Friend of the Year.
Hosted 4 meetings of the AONL Foundation Corporate Advisory Council.
Grew the Foundation team by two people. Erica Cheng and Veronica Moreno joined the Foundation on May 8, 2023 in their roles as program specialist and administrative coordinator, respectively.
More than 600 donors and sponsors gave and pledged more than $300,000 to support the Foundation's work.
AONL Foundation Committees began work to:
• Review the current strategic plan and make recommendations for the future.
• Add structure to the Foundation board recruitment and nominations process.
• Enhance the development and fundraising processes through major, transformational, planned gifts, and sponsorships.Added the ability to accept gifts via ACH, EFT, Google Pay and Apple Pay.
