Abstract | Advancement: Implementation of a Nursing Professional Development Career Path
Though there have been decades-long challenges in nurse staffing, particularly for bedside nurses, the COVID-19 pandemic created a chasm so wide that new approaches for recruiting, retaining and strengthening the nursing workforce are required. At the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) in Knoxville, a novel career path was developed specifically for bedside nurses. It serves as a mechanism to recognize nurses, based on their valued contributions, and provides a roadmap for future professional development. We believe greater focus on professional development will not only strengthen our workforce, but also assist in attracting new nurses and retaining nurses at the bedside
