Researchers use blood test to predict COVID-19 ICU admission
Researchers at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. used proteomic profiling—a technique to screen for multiple proteins in the blood—to analyze blood samples taken from COVID-19 patients upon hospital admission. They found elevated levels of five proteins associated with neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in those patients who later became critically ill. The researchers believe this information can be used to inform clinical decisions about who would benefit from particular therapies before severe symptoms arise. (Yale News article, 2/26/21)
