Protocol reduces self-harm for at-risk ED patients
A protocol reduced episodes of self-harm among at-risk patients in one large, urban emergency department (ED) by more than half, according to a study in this month’s Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. Key elements of the protocol included creating safe bathrooms; increasing observers and their training; managing patient access to belongings; and managing clothing search or removal. Additional interventions were implemented for exceptionally high-risk patients. (The Joint Commission news release, 12/5/21)
