Michigan hospitals share data to guide reopening decisions
A free report from the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC) provides utilization data that can inform hospitals as they plan for the resumption of elective surgeries. The resource utilization report reflects seven years of data on 17 common procedures in dozens of hospitals across the state. It includes length of stay, use of critical resources and discharge dispositions, information that can help hospitals consider the availability of home-based services and rehabilitation beds as well as internal resources before reinstituting certain procedures. MVC Director Hari Nathan, PhD, MD, hopes the report data will be used to inform care over the long term. “We suspect that the scarcity of resources imposed by COVID-19 will actually help hospitals and health systems focus on rationalizing the way they deliver surgical care...matching resources to the complexity of the patient and procedure, or even changing the locations where certain procedures are done, including outpatient centers,” he says.
