ECRI updates safety guidance on extended use of N95 respirators
A clinical evidence assessment from independent quality and safety organization ECRI provides updated information on the safety of reusing N95 respirators and using them for extended periods. Because no existing studies assess the safety of these masks under these conditions, ECRI examined 21 laboratory studies with the potential to provide “some rational basis for actions during a crisis.” The authors concluded available studies support prioritizing N95 extended use over reuse because of the risk of pathogen transfer. Additionally, they stated, decontamination of N95 respirators may be effective, but that further testing is needed because the materials used by mask manufacturers vary.
