CNO Urges Hospitals to Invest in Responses to Nurse Burnout
Hospitals need to talk about burnout the same way they talk about benefits, says AONL board member Anne Schmidt, chief nursing officer at Virginia-based Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center and Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center. In a commentary for the American Hospital Association (AHA), she describes local efforts as well as AHA and AONL initiatives to combat burnout. “Increasingly, hospitals are implementing policies and programs to address the mental and emotional well-being of our staff, just as we do the physical and financial. But it’s not enough to put these programs into place. We must invest the same time and energy into promoting our commitment to them, as well,” she writes. (AHA News article, 10/20/20)
