VanRiel explains how CNOs can leverage international nurses

Recruiting international nurses can help fill short-term and long-term staffing gaps and enhance workforce diversity, according to Yolanda VanRiel, PhD, RN, nursing department chair at North Carolina Central University in Durham. International nurses will work in rural and underserved areas, she says. However, CNOs should follow World Health Organization guidance to ensure nurses are not draining their countries of adequate health care resources. To overcome differences in credentialing, licensing and education, VanRiel suggests health systems partner with international organizations and educational institutions to develop a customized training program. She encourages CNOs to seek a balance of nurses from their local communities and internationally to build a sustainable, diverse and skilled workforce. (HealthLeaders Media article, 12/2/24)
