Trump Administration tells CDC to stop collaborating with WHO
The Trump Administration ordered all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff who work with World Health Organization officials to immediately stop their collaborations and “await further guidance,” according to a memo. The stoppage surprised public health officials, who said the order would hinder work on investigating and trying to halt outbreaks of Marburg virus and mpox in Africa, as well as other global health threats, including bird flu outbreaks among U.S. livestock. President Trump last week signed an executive order to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO, but that order was not effective immediately. Congress must approve the withdrawal, and the U.S. must provide a one-year notice and meet its financial obligations for the current fiscal year. (AP News article, 1/27/25)
