Trinity Health redesigns care using nursing teams
Trinity Health in Livonia, Mich., is using a care team model comprising nurses, nursing assistants and virtual care technology to redesign care delivery. Gay Landstrom, PhD, RN, an AONL member and CNO, says the model addresses the shortage of skilled nurses and reduces complicated workflows negatively affecting patient care and staff morale. A nurse and an LPN or certified nursing assistant comprise the bedside team on med-surg, telemetry and step-down care floors. In addition, a veteran nurse works from the telehealth center to monitor patients and assist the bedside team, with documentation and consults. The health system implemented a team model after research showed 40% of tasks done by bedside nurses could be completed by someone other than an RN. (HealthLeaders Media article, 11/14/23)
