Study surveys novice nurses on burnout, resilience
Retaining newly licensed nurses requires addressing burnout and improving support and resources, a study published in the January issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration found. The study, based on a survey of 547 nurses, unexpectedly found the more resilient the nurse, the greater likelihood the nurse planned to leave. It also found non-White newly licensed nurses were more likely to leave after one year due to discrimination. The authors suggest CNOs should implement programs for underrepresented people in nursing to support their transition to practice and sense of belonging. They urge nurse leaders to foster relationships with novice nurses, conduct stay interviews to learn about workplace strengths and weaknesses and provide off-shift educators, behavioral response teams and resource nurses.
