Study discusses how to care for LGBTQ+ people in nursing homes
An article explores the experiences and needs of the growing number of LGBTQ+ older adults living in nursing homes, outlines best facility practices and presents resources to provide culturally appropriate care. Published in the November issue of Clinics of Geriatric Medicine, the article discusses how older LGBTQ+ adults have experienced health disparities that have accumulated over a lifetime. Many LGBTQ+ adults fear unwanted disclosure of their sexual orientation or gender identity status. Nursing homes should respect their autonomy and provide a welcoming and inclusive space so they feel safe and comfortable. The authors list best practices to decrease LGBTQ+ residents’ vulnerability to negative outcomes occurring due to system failures or staffing issues. (Newswise release, 12/12/23)
