Study: Nurse managers can influence nurses’ intent to stay

Investing in nurse managers’ competency can help to create supportive work environments and influence front-line nurses’ intent to stay, a study found. Published in the October issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration, the authors used a cross-sectional study design incorporating AONL’s nurse-manager competency assessment tool. They analyzed data from 248 nurse managers and front-line nurses collected from 43 hospitals in 20 states. The authors found evidence to support previous studies tying nurse manager competency as a factor in creating healthy and supportive practice environments. The results give credence to the need to assess and develop nurse manager leadership skills and competency to create healthy work environments, the authors say. Future studies should explore how specific competencies affect front-line nurses’ intent to stay.
