Study: Joint Commission titration standards introduce patient safety concerns
The Joint Commission’s 2017 revision of elements for orders for the titration of continuous intravenous medications is the focus of a study in the September issue of the American Journal of Critical Care. The researchers surveyed nurses to explore unanticipated consequences of the change to the titration standards. For decades, medication titration has been within nurses’ scope and practice, the researchers wrote. They concluded the standards impose harm by eroding workplace wellness and introducing moral dilemmas and patient safety concerns.
