Study: Include nurses in medication administration policies
Medication administration technology should be developed in collaboration with front-line nurses who are tasked with medication administration, a study concludes. Published in March in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the authors conducted 32 interviews of nurses practicing at two urban U.S. health systems to explore medication administration hazards and inefficiencies. The nurses named 10 persistent safety hazards and inefficiencies, including issues pertaining to communication between safety monitoring systems and nurses, alert fatigue and an overreliance on medication administration technology.
