Study: ED boarding negatively affects clinicians’ satisfaction

Clinicians raised concerns about patient safety and quality of care delivered to boarding patients in emergency departments and said boarding negatively affected their satisfaction, according to a study. Published in the July 2023 issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, the study found clinicians reported high rates of perceived verbal and/or physical abuse from boarding patients (86.8% of nurses and 41.1% of providers). The clinicians suggested standardizing care, proactive planning and cultural change to improve care. Researchers sent a cross-sectional survey to ED attending physicians, resident physicians, advanced practice providers and nurses at a single hospital; 94 responded for a 34.1% response rate.
