Study: Burnout significantly impacts nurse turnover rates
Findings from a recent National Academies of Medicine study showed a significant link between nurse burnout and organizational turnover. The researchers surveyed 1,688 direct care nurses in three hospitals in 2018 and again in 2019. For each unit increase in emotional exhaustion reported by the nurses, there was a 12% increase in a nurse leaving the organization. Other findings showed burnout to be a concern for more than half of the nurses surveyed, with day shifts and increased exposure to patients’ deaths emerging as contributing factors.
