Strategies unveiled to build a strong nurse leader pipeline

Nursing leaders at HCA Healthcare North Florida Division describe strategies to build a strong nurse leader pipeline program at all levels. In the March issue of Voice of Nursing Leadership, the authors discuss how they elevated the front-line nurse leader from a charge nurse role to a clinical nurse coordinator by changing the job description and increasing leadership responsibilities. They provided structured training with leadership development courses and certification required for front-line nursing. Leaders implemented a shared governance model at each facility, including a clinical nurse coordinator council. They also offered leadership education for all aspiring leaders. To track progress, leaders measured the health system’s nurse-sensitive indicators, employee engagement and retention, patient care experience and physician engagement metrics.
