Racism in nursing still prevalent, survey finds
About eight in 10 nurses of color said they experienced racism and discrimination from patients, and six in 10 said they experienced it from colleagues, according to a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation survey. Almost half of the 980 respondents said a culture of racism exists in nursing schools, with 60% of Black respondents reporting racism and nearly eight in 10 saying more diversity, equity and inclusion training is needed. However, less than one in four nurses reported to management the discrimination they saw or experienced. The nationwide survey, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, investigated the extent and severity of racism and discrimination witnessed by nurses, how often it is reported and the culture of the institutions where it occurs.
